More Guitar Lessons For Beginners – this one for the Goo Goo Dolls song Name. For the record, I love this song. It is such a great acoustic song to play. Also, when I think of acoustic songs, Goo Goo Dolls Name is one of the first ones to popup in my mind. The most interesting aspect of this goo goo dolls song is that it’s in a super funky alternate tuning (Don’t worry, we’ll cover that below). Most people think they can play it in standard E guitar tuning… these people are greatly mistaken. I’ve seen tons of different ways to play this song online but I got to give it to Brent Persia and his YouTube video. I based my over and lesson after his with a few minor modifications. To make Name sound like the way the Goo Goo Dolls make it, you gotta be in the alternate tuning, be able to master the solo (the solo makes the song) and be good at softly plucking and strumming individual notes. It’s really not a hard song to play, you just have to be in the right guitar tuning.

Apparently, this song is about the lead singer Johnny Reznick’s childhood and about how his sisters had to raise him. His parents died when he was young and certain lyrics in the song depict what he had felt at the time.

What’s the music and guitar theory behind the song?

Honestly… I’m not too sure. He’s in an open tuning but as soon as you throw alternate tunings out there, my musical “breadcrumbs” get blown away in the wind. Usually if you’re in an open tuning, when you strum the 6 strings all open and place certain fingers on notes within the key, you can make some pretty cool melodies. That’s what I’m thinking Reznick is doing. I’m also pretty sure it’s in the open tuning of a variation of D. Ask me a question about standard tuning and I’m on it, ha! There’s really no recognizable guitar chords in this song that would be beneficial to know, especially in this tuning.
